Travel: Journey to the Shanxis
Written by Julen Madariaga on April 29th, 2009Some pictures of my recent travels in Shanxi & Shanxi. As with past editions, 5 words per picture.

The Shanxis have solid history
There are some alarming Gods
And alarming fire fighting equipment
Guanyu deserved better than polystyrene
The council should buy benches
The way of The Way
is a rather steep Way
No, I kid you not
Stairs are out of spec
Instant Noodles for the climbers
Those that don’t get disneyfied
An authentic Ming Dinasty Mandarin
Apprentice of authentic Ming mandarin
WMDs detected in Yuncheng fair
Some love the green leaves

It’s Pingyao, in Shanxi. The mountains are Huashan, in the other Shanxi.

The other Shanxi would be Shaanxi- two a’s as an official exception to the regular rules to save confusion.
Ah, Yuncheng. Didn’t get to spend enough time there, but Yuncheng and Linfen could keep me happily occupied for far more than the one working weekend I spent in the area. Awesome places.

Hi Chris, thanks for the clarification.
I am aware of the pinyin exception for Shaanxi, it comes in handy you don’t have the characters. But this gets many non chinese speakers confused, as they think it is read sha-an-xi. So I chose to add to the confusion and use the single-a pinyin spelling (often seen written in China!)
Re: Linfen: I was scared to go after recently reviewing a book that speaks of the unbearable levels of pollution there. Perhaps we were really lucky, but the day we were there the sky was blue and we couldn’t detect any particular smell. The air felt cleaner than Shanghai’s.

“solidified history” comes from a Chinese cliche: architecture is solidified history.
Shanxi has the largest amount of remains of ancient buildings in China. Guess the photo you took must be near some old buildings… many of which are protected to be disneylandized. …
