Political Change made Simple

Written by Julen Madariaga on February 18th, 2009

I just came across this picture on Hecaitou’s Blog.  Brilliant:

sense

I hate spoiling jokes, so those that can speak a bit of Chinese should figure it out by themselves.

For those who don’t speak Chinese, see after the fold.

SOLUTION:

By now you should have noticed that the large Mao portrait is missing on the Tiananmen Gate. Mao in Chinese is 毛,which also means fluff, or hair (mostly bodily hair).

The characters for depilation are 脱毛,脱 meaning to take off.

This MUST be a Photoshop effort… Philips would never dream of using this publicly. Also, the number of Chinese (or Western!) people who know the word ‘depilation’ could be counted on one hand.

Additionally, “motionto” rather than “motion to” suggests a slightly amateur effort, but I guess I’ve seen far worse in magazines.

    Hi DWR,

Yes, it is a joke. It certainly is not a real Philips advert, although some of the commenters on the Hecaitou blog really seemed to believe it.

I liked especially one of the comments there, which said that: this is a very particular joke because you can only get it if you understand BOTH Chinese and Western cultures.

You would think that its obvious for a Chinese to get the joke, it is not. Quite a few of the commentators on hecaitou did not get it. Presumably because they don’t know the word “depilation” and they didn’t really identify properly the object on the lower right part of the picture. :)

Besides, that picture looks more like a shaving machine than a depilating one no?

Aiya! Now I feel dumb! I’ve been looking at this image the last couple of days thinking, Huh?! And I never noticed either the missing portrait or the shaver. The ‘depilation’ should’ve been a clue, obviously, but it never quite registered.

So thank you. Being made to feel dumb every now and then is good for the soul.

I immediately saw the portrait missing, but didn’t make the connection…I’ll chalk it up to being very tired after a big dinner.

I THOUGHT IT IS AN AD FOR PHILIPS SHAVER THAT HAS PRECISELY CUT OFF THE MIDDLE LINE OF THE RED FLAGS…..
